7 REASONS YOU CAN BE REMOVED FROM YOUR FLIGHT

A man in business attire is expressing frustration while holding papers, seated next to a woman who appears distressed, with her hands on her head, on an airplane.

Air travel is one of the safest and most efficient ways to get around the world, but it also comes with clear rules designed to protect the passengers and aircrew. While most people board a flight without any issues, there are certain behaviors and situations that can lead to being removed from an aircraft. Understanding these reasons not only helps you avoid problems at the airport, but also ensures a safer and more respectful experience for everyone on board.

While many of us have seen people getting kicked off a flight – either while browsing on social media or the evening news – but it’s not always due to extreme behavior. Most of the situations are actually easy to avoid by following directions and being respectful to others. Let’s dive in to the top seven reasons people are removed from their flight.

  1. Disruptive, Violent, or Aggressive Behavior.
    • This ranges from making threats to interfering with a flight crew member’s ability to perform their duties to refusing to comply with instructions. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has a zero-tolerance policy for unruly or dangerous behavior and unruly passengers can face removal, fines, or further action.
  2. Dress Code Violations.
    • Airlines actually do have dress codes and passengers failing to follow them can be denied boarding or removed from a flight. Here are the most general categories:
      • Clothing with offensive graphics or language
      • Overly revealing clothing or beachwear outfits
      • Items that pose hygiene or safety concerns (open-toed shoes, visibly dirty clothing, or clothing that has a strong odor
  3. Poor Hygiene
    • Excessive body odor, unhygienic habits, or leaving messes that affect other passengers can be grounds for removal.
  4. Seat Disputes or Refusing to Follow Seating Assignments
    • Arguing over seats, refusing to move, or blocking access can disrupt boarding or safety procedures.
  5. Public Intoxication
    • Excessive alcohol or drug use that impairs judgment or endangers others is immediate grounds for removal. Even if you’re calm, visible signs of impairment can be enough for crew to take action.
  6. Smoking or Vaping
    • Smoking or vaping in the cabin or lavatories is strictly prohibited and can result in immediate removal, fines, or legal consequences.
  7. Appearing Sick or Contagious
    • If a passenger has a contagious illness, is vomiting, or otherwise poses a health risk, the airline may remove them to protect others.

Being removed from a flight is rare, but it typically happens when safety, health, or respect for others is compromised. Airlines are responsible for maintaining a safe and controlled environment, and crew members are trained to act quickly when necessary. By following instructions, staying mindful of your health and behavior, and respecting fellow passengers, you can help ensure your journey stays smooth from the moment you board to when you land.
